Toilet Scene Analysis

This video is one created by Sam De Almeida and Myself

I had to create a video which included several camera shots making the scene believable. The scene involves Sam walking in on me while on the toilet. We used this story line as we thought we could incorparete many shots types and camera angles. The scene is set in the boys toilets and around midday. The image seen first is a title page, with the title of the scene on. This is very useful as it helps explain what is going on and sets the scene, although 'the toilet' isn't very explanatory it sets the scene. For a scene which is longer than this it would make sense to put a short explanation or a short few clips before the scene starts so that the viewer can easily understand what is going on. The first shot of action is of Sam walking through the door. You can see he is walking in from a corridor but you cannot see where he is walking, you can only assume he is walking into the toilet. The camera shot is a close up, this shot is good as it helps introduce one of the characters and shows detail of the location. A better shot for this would of been a mid shot as this would of shown of less detail of the character but more of the scenery helping to set the scene. The next shot is of me on the toilet, for this we used a mid shot, this was a good choice as you can clearly see that the location of this shot,m which was in a toilet cubicle. This also showed what my charcter was doing. A shot we could of used instead of this shot would have a Point of view shot, this would of been quite hard but i think that the shot would look really good if it worked out well. A close up would of been bad as although it would of introduced a charcter well, you probably wouldnt be able to see where this shot was, maybe making it confusing for the viewer. The last shot in the scene, is sam walking up to the cubicle and opening the door and me shouting "What are you doing here?" and then the scene ends. For this shot we used a wide shot, this was a good choice of camera shot for this shot as it allowed both charcters to be seen easily and also for alot of the loaction to be put into the scene, This worked well as it allowed a little bit of action to be put into the scene and it helps show that the scene is based in a toilet. Overall the scene worked quite well, as the audience is clear where the scene is shot and who the characters are, but it is quite boring as it had no effects in or movement. It would of helped to make the scene more interesting if the camera panned in the last shot. Also we could of used a differnt camera angle as each shot we used a normal angle. I am pleased i didnt use any transitions when editing as I think they help define a new scene, putting one in may confuse the viewer, as they won't understand whats going on. I didnt add a soundtrack when editing as i thought the scene was to short to include any music. For this scene when filming we didnt really focus of Mise-en-scene, as we didnt think we needed costumes or any ellaborate props or sets to make the scene effective. We also didnt change the lighting as we didnt have any lightstands or portbale lights avalible to use, if we did i think we would of used them in the last shot to draw attention to the toilet cubicle I was in. In conclusion i thought that this scene went quite well but we could of improved it by planning more and filming several types of angle and shot type for each shot so when we edited it we could have put together a very interesting scene.
